72 Reports that changed and shaped our worlds

The “Centerfold” layout of the report was intended for teacher recommendations. As explained to parents, “Since personality development is the purpose of education, this statement is sent to give you the school’s estimate of the desirable growth and achievement of your child. His success is conditioned by his attitudes and work habits, as well as by his effort in relation to his ability.”TDC_ReportCard_1950_05_500pxs

“Tracy’s contributions to the class in the form of added in new information are appreciated,” Mrs. MacLean thoughtfully added. And in retrospect I am sure it was the result of my rapid progress in language arts, particularly in the area of oral composition. However, she continued, “sometimes in his eagerness to “get through,” he finds he has not followed directions.”

Well, that was a shock.  Me, not following directions?

Trying to understand this devastating assessment, I expect that I was simply trying to “contribute greatly” to my own progress by anticipating the opportunity to “play in the sunshine,” as suggested in the directions provided by the progress report.
